Utilitys Server Hacked, Infected With Ransomware

Electricity, water supply uninterrupted while authorities work on solution to locked files.

The corporate network server of the Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) in Michigan reportedly was hit by malware that left staff locked out of their computers. Supply of electricity and water, however, remained uninterrupted and customers were unaffected by the attack.
According to Daily Kos, the BWL network last month was attacked by ransomware, which came via a phishing attack and ultimately encrypted the files on the server. BWLs phone service was affected as well, but officials there say no consumer data was compromised. Also, customers are able to make online payments as usual, say reports.
The FBI and Michigan police are probing the attack and BWL officials are working with experts to retrieve the data.
