Telegram Agrees to Register Messaging App With Russia

The messaging app company will comply with Russias registration mandate but not share confidential user data, founder says.

Facing pressure from the Russian government, Telegram today agreed to store information on its message app users on that countrys servers, according to a Reuters report.
Although Telegram will now be listed as a distributor on a Russian government list, the company said it will not violate its user privacy and confidentiality policy when turning over basic company information, says Telegrams founder Pavel Durov in the Reuters report.
Russia has been pressuring Telegram to store its information on Russian servers, following terrorists suicide bombings in which terrorists allegedly used the Telegrams app. Russias communications agency threatened to block Telegrams messages if it did not comply, Reuters stated.
