Popular mobile communications encryption algorithm is crackable, Karsten Nohl says

Following up on his promise from August, Karsten Nohl this week published a crack of the long-standing GSM algorithm.
The algorithm, which encrypts information on much of the worlds mobile phones, can be decrypted to eavesdrop or steal information from mobile phone users, said Nohl, speaking to an audience at the Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin.
Nohls
report on the cracking project
is now available on the Web. He said 24 people worked independently to reproduce the binary code log for the algorithm, which contains the equivalent of about 2 terabytes of data.
