OTA Issues Checklist For Securing IoT Devices

Online Trust Alliance marks National Cybersecurity Awareness Month with measures on how to enhance online safety.

On the occasion of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the Online Trust Alliance (OTA) has released a checklist of steps for ensuring the security of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The non-profit organization urges consumers to regularly check and optimize privacy settings of home and wearable devices, including routers and modems, in order to keep them risk-free.
OTA also advises creating unique passwords and user names, updating contact details of devices for regular receipt of security notifications, and disabling unknown or unused equipment from the Internet. Users should also back up files onto unconnected storage devices, and reset devices to factory settings before discarding them.
“Millions of consumers are the victims of identity theft and online scams each year, and many may not realize that the smart devices that make their lives easier can also make them more vulnerable,” says Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson.
