Man Arrested For Hacking University Emails

Phoenix resident allegedly attacked more than 1,000 email accounts, reset 1,050 passwords, and stole confidential data.

Jonathan Powell of Phoenix has been arrested and charged with allegedly hacking more than 1,000 email accounts at universities in New York and Pennsylvania, attempting to attack accounts for 75 other colleges, and resetting passwords for 1,050 accounts, Reuter reports. He allegedly used the hacked email accounts to compromise social media pages of the victims, including Facebook, LinkedIn, and Google, and steal confidential data.
According to prosecutors, Powell’s biggest attack was on Pace University of New York, where he had breached since October of last year and managed to reset passwords for 1,035 accounts. He also appeared to be searching photos for “potentially embarrassing content.”
This case should serve as a wake-up call for universities and educational institutions around the country, said US attorney Preet Bharara.
