ISC2 Issues White House Cybersecurity Executive Order Recommendations

The industry trade group calls on President Trump to make workforce development a top priority when he issues the final version of the White House cybersecurity executive order.

ISC2 announced today a laundry list of recommendations for President Trump to tackle in his first 100 days of office, starting with a request to prioritize workforce development within the pages of the pending cybersecurity executive order.
The international cybersecurity trade association ISC2 drafted its extensive list of recommendations after a December gathering, which included federal agency CISOs and executives, and retired Brig. Gen. Gregory Touhill who recently left his position as the first ever federal Chief Information Security Officer for the Executive Office of the President.
“Significant progress has been made over the past decade to advance the federal cyber workforce; our recommendations reflect the importance of building future cybersecurity policy — including the pending executive order — on the existing foundation,” Dan Waddell, ISC2 managing director, North America Region, said in a statement. The recommendations were previously presented during a Congressional hearing, with ISC2s aim to aid with the presidential transition.
ISC2s recommendations include:
Harden the Workforce
. Everyone must learn cybersecurity. We have to break the commodity focus of simply buying technology and stopping there, without focusing on training all users, according to the statement.
Prevent Getting Lost in Translation
. The government needs effective communicators who can translate technical risk to business leaders, according to the recommendations.
Compliance Does Not Equal Security — Embrace Risk Management
. In the government’s quest for cyber resiliency, a risk management perspective will be essential.
A Standard Cyber Workforce Lexicon
. Once finalized, the NICE Cybersecurity Workforce Framework should provide an excellent resource for workforce development.
