An unauthorized third-party accessed a database containing information from the IKEA Canada online store, exposing the personal data of approximately 95,000 customers. The breach occurred between August 2 and June 14, according to an IKEA spokesperson.
The breached customer records included names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, encrypted passwords, purchase history, and payment card details. IKEA assured customers that no sensitive data such as Social Insurance numbers or credit card CVV codes were compromised.
IKEA Canada has notified all affected customers and is working with forensic experts and authorities to investigate the incident. The company is also implementing additional security measures to prevent similar breaches in the future.
Customers are advised to monitor their financial accounts for any unauthorized activity, change their passwords on the IKEA Canada website, and be cautious of any suspicious emails or messages asking for personal information.
IKEA has not announced any compensation plans for affected customers at this time. However, the company is providing free credit monitoring services to those impacted by the breach.
Other companies should prioritize cybersecurity measures to protect customer data, regularly audit their systems for potential vulnerabilities, and have a response plan in place in case of a data breach.
