German Telco Probes Possible Hack Of 900,000 Customers

Network outages bring down services of many Deutsche Telekom customers raising suspicion that external parties may be involved.

Deutsche Telekom, the German telecom giant, is investigating whether hackers were behind the recent network outages that impacted 900,000 of its 20 million fixed-line customers, Financial Times (FT) reports. The problem began Sunday afternoon affecting particular routers only and causing major fluctuations in quality for some while others had no service at all.
It is suspected that hackers may be involved because only particular software in the routers was hit, despite the network working normally. The company issued a software update to troubleshoot and asked customers to activate it by reconnecting their routers.
There has been no report of any data loss nor has there been any claim of responsibility for the attack so far, says FT.
