EU Takes Step Toward Cyberattack Sanctions


European leaders complete first step toward establishing a sanctions regime.



European Union leaders have approved an initiative that would expand sanctions on nations proven to have conducted cyberattacks. A group of nations, including Lithuania, the UK, the Netherlands, Romania, Finland, Denmark, Latvia, and Estonia, submitted the proposal, which is the first step toward establishing a sanctions regime.
As a result of the vote, EU Council president Donald Tusk said that ministers should now begin work on a sanctions regime specific to cyberattacks.
The proposal comes as a result of alleged interference in European elections and attacks against wireless networks used at meetings on European security and cooperation.
