DDoS Attacks Soar in First Half of 2020

Shorter, faster, multivector attacks had a greater impact on victims.

The first six months of 2020 saw a significant increase in distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks using multiple vectors, with a simultaneous rise in the throughput of those attacks, according to a new Netsount report.
NetScouts 2020 Threat Intelligence Report details a shift to shorter, faster, multivector attacks that had a greater impact on victims, with more than 4.83 million DDoS attacks from January through June. Criminals focused their efforts on healthcare, e-commerce, and educational services, with attacks designed to quickly take down victims sites.
Attacks with more than 15 vectors were up 2,851% since 2017, while the average duration of those attacks dropped 51% since the first half of 2019. Attack volume topped out at 407 million packets per second, with attacks intended to hit, have an impact, and end before security teams could respond to the threat.
