Cybercrime-as-a-Service Offered To Militants, Terrorists, Says Europol

The Darknet could provide ample resources and services for terrorists to carry out attacks, claims report.

An annual cybercrime threat report from Europol highlights a move away from traditional cybercrime and new dangers that involve recruitment of cybercriminals by terrorist groups, reports Reuters.  A “crime as a service” offer by cybercriminals has, however, so far been used only to deface websites and nothing more serious, the report adds.
The EU police agency spoke of the dangers the Internet’s underworld Darknet poses as a market for criminal services and illicit arms that could be used by militants to carry out attacks. It also expressed concern over the world’s increasing dependency on technology and claimed frauds involving bank cash-machine networks and payment card transactions were on the rise.
We have also seen a marked shift in cyber-facilitated activities relating to trafficking in human beings, terrorism and other threats, said Europol director Rob Wainwright, referring to growing ransomware and phishing attack threats.
