Anonymous Wages DDoS Attacks On Banks Worldwide

Hacktivist group Anonymous launches month-long Operation Icarus to cripple global financial system.

Banks across the globe have become the target of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks launched by the hacktivist group Anonymous as part of its so-called Operation Icarus campaign. In a May 4 video, the group warned financial bodies around the world to be prepared for “one of the most massive attacks ever seen in the history of Anonymous,” International Business Times reports.
The hacker group has teamed up with Ghost Squad to disrupt the banks, and claims to have successfully hit eight international banks so far. The intention, says Anonymous, is to “not let the banks win.”
Anonymous says the month-long campaign will target 160 banks worldwide and include institutions like the World Bank, IMF, New York Stock Exchange, and Bank of England.
Thus far, the official websites of the DDoSed banks -- which included The Central Bank of the Dominican Republic, the Guernsey Financial Services Commission, the Central Bank of Maldives, the Dutch Central Bank, the National Bank of Panama and the Central Bank of Kenya, the Central Bank of Mexico and the Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina -- were back online as of the report.
