European Regulator Probes Yahoo’s 2015 Secret Email Scan

Dublin-based Data Protection Commissioner trying to ascertain if Yahoo broke Europe’s privacy laws.

Irish data regulator Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) is investigating whether Yahoo broke the European Union’s privacy laws when last year, at the request of US authorities, it scanned millions of emails looking for information related to national security, Reuters reports.
We are in regular contact with Yahoo! EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) in clarifying certain facts of this case and will then proceed to take appropriate next steps, a DPC spokeswoman said.
According to sources, Yahoo had used a software program to go through the email accounts which it said was within US laws, but there is no clarity as to whether EU citizens’ emails were scanned, too.
Analysts meanwhile believe the email scan issue could jeopardize Yahoo’s $4.8 billion takeover by Verizon Communications.
